Optimism at the Cork Film Festival for the future of the Irish filmmaking.
The 38th Cork Film Festival was officially opened by Minister Michael D Higgins with a focus on Irish filmmaking.
The Cork Film Festival began as a high publicity, glamorous event that brought international actors, directors and producers to the city. In recent years the festival has moved from personalities to focus more on the films.
The queues at the box office tonight testified to the success of the new policy.
During the week long festival 160 films will be screened. Along with the main festival, there is also a tangent festival taking place in schools which hopes to encourage an interest in Irish filmmaking.
Speaking at the opening, Michael D Higgins is confident that the festival will be a success. Director of the Cork Film Festival, Donal Sheehan, is hopeful that the festival can contribute to the establishment of a popular film culture in Ireland and support the evolution of the Irish film industry
