The final scheduled passenger train departs from Castletown Geoghegan in County Westmeath.

At Castletown Geoghegan station master Christopher Newman checks his watch as the final passenger train arrives on time. Postman Liam Ó Faoláin shakes hands with the guard before the train departs.

Constructed by the Midland and Great Western Railway Company, the Castletown Geoghegan station opened in 1851 to serve the Mullingar and Athlone line.

The line is being closed to passenger services due to a restructuring plan by the national rail company CIÉ (Córas Iompair Éireann) but will continue to serve freight trains.
