Thousands pedal through the streets of Dublin on National Bike Day.

The inaugural National Bike Day, sees fifty sponsored cycle rallies taking place throughout the country.

Bicycles of all shapes and sizes, and not just of the two-wheeled variety took over Dublin city centre for a rally which started at Parnell Square and will finishes in Dunboyne, County Meath.

Some were built for speed...others were elegant and rare.

Organised by the Irish Cycling Federation (ICF) in conjunction with the Rehabilitation Institute, it is sponsored by Irish Raleigh Industries and the Health Education Bureau.

ICF Touring Secretary Michael Toolin hopes that the rally will attract up to four thousand people, and tells RTÉ News that today’s events have two purposes,

Promote leisure side of cycling, and to get some money for the Rehabilitation Institute.

Former Miss Ireland Jakki Moore was among the first to cross the starting line, and all those who followed looked set to enjoy a twenty mile cycle in the sunshine.
