The American company Amdahl Computers opens a factory in Glasnevin, Dublin.
The new Amdahl facility was officially opened by the American Ambassador William Shannon. The Glasnevin location will be a temporary base before Amdahl moves to a permanent location in Swords.
The factory, at Glasnevin Industrial Estate, will make computers for the European and Middle East markets.
Chairman of Amdhal, Dr Gene Amdhal, brought the ambassador William Shannon and Minister of State Mr Ray Burke on a tour of the plant where they were shown the complexities of the computers in closer detail.
Each computer costs between one and a half and three million pounds.
Forty people are already in training at the Amdahl headquarters in the United States. The move to Swords is planned for 1979 when it is envisaged that the factory will employ 240 people.
