Protests over violent assaults on bar staff means many pubs in Dublin remain closed.

Before the protest march barmen attended a mass for James Booth, the young Wexford barman who died after an incident in a Dublin pub. Barmen marched across Dublin city demanding tougher penalties and mandatory sentences against those convicted of assault.

The march was organised by the Irish National Union of Vintners and Allied Trades Assistants, the barmen's organisation.

The organisation claim that violence in public houses is on the rise. They are seeking stronger action by the courts against people convicted of assaults. The march made its way from Parnell Square through the city ending at the Department of Justice on St Stephen's Green. Three of the barmen along with representatives from the Vintners Association later met with the Minister for Justice to discuss their grievances.
