Residents of the Moyross challenge Limerick Corporation's withdrawal of funding for wall building on their housing estate.

Limerick Corporation's Moyross housing estate was built to an open plan design in the mid 1970s.

This meant the 600 houses had no front or separating garden walls.

In 1978 citing safety concerns for children at play, Moyross residents asked the Corporation to build walls around their gardens. The authorities agreed to supply the materials if the residents supplied the labour.

Using the Corpration's housing maintenance fund, some walls were built but in 1981. However when cuts were made to this budget, Limerick Corporation stopped providing the materials. As the building work at Moyross was suspended, some residents paid for walls with their own money.

Tim O’Driscoll of the Moyross Action Group explains they have made repeated requests to the Corporation for the resumption of the supply of materials, but to no avail. He also points out the irregularities with how the materials were allocated, believing some residents with connections in the Corporation were given preferential treatment. He insists he can prove there are,

Low standards in high places.

Limerick Corporation's housing officer Flan O'Neill vehemently denies there were any such political favours carried out.

The Community Council selected and organised the blocks where the walls would be built and we responded by delivering the materials and expertise.

Flan O'Neill explains the Corporation work directly with the Moyross Community Council. They have replied to all correspondence from the Moyross Action Group, but cannot meet their demands for more walls.

Moyross resident Josephine O’Brien paid for walls on her property. She is aggrieved that Limerick Corporation is refusing to cover the cost,

I think everybody who built their own wall should get their money back.

Flan O'Neill says there is no question of people who independently built walls getting a refund from the Corporation.
