The Technico-Telefunken precision approach system, the most advanced radar aid to pilots is launched at Shannon Airport.

At Shannon Airport in County Clare, Minister for Transport and Power Erskine Childers officially inaugurates the Technico-Telefunken precision approach system, the most advanced radar aid to pilots.

It is part of the Department of Transport and Power's half million pound radar expansion programme. An Army Air Corps plane is used to demonstrate the system.

With the aid of this radar equipment ground control can see at once if a plane, 16 kilometres from the airport, departs more than 18 metres from the correct course, or if its altitude is more than 9 metres from the glide path along which it flies to land.
