Approval given for development of Spencer Dock and hearing begins on what to do with Carlton Cinema site

Minister for the Environment Noel Dempsey has given approval for a €2.5 billion development of Spencer Dock in Dublin. Spencer Dock is located between the Financial Services Centre (IFSC) and the Point Depot. Original plans for the area were rejected by An Bord Pleanála on the basis that,

The scale, bulk and mass was inappropriate.

An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern had described the scheme as a "monstrosity".

A new scheme for the site has now been approved and includes a 100 metre high building, two 11-storey buildings, 9,000 residential units, alongside more office space. Now that the plans have been approved by Minister Noel Dempsey, it is expected that work on the development will begin shortly.

Meanwhile, An Bord Pleanála has begun a hearing into the future of the Carlton Cinema site on Dublin's O'Connell Street. Planning permission had previously been sought for the construction of a shopping centre and entertainment mall on the site.
