Weather does not put off over 40,000 women taking part in the Dublin Mini Marathon.

The wet and drizzly conditions for the twenty fifth Women's Mini Marathon didn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands of runners, joggers and walkers who waited behind the starting point at Fitzwilliam Square.

One group of veteran runners were celebrating an anniversary together. They have run in the event every year for the last twenty five years while raising money for charity,

The Children's Hospital in Tallaght...the Rutland Centre…the Lourdes Invalid Fund.

In 1983 nine thousand women took part in the first Dublin Women's Mini Marathon. Today an estimated ten million euro will be raised for various charities by forty thousand participants.

Long distance runner Marie Davenport from Ennis was the first to cross the finish line at Saint Stephen's Green. Now living in Boston the former double Olympian was happy with her win in a time of 33 minutes and 13 seconds,

It really is fantastic just to lead the race and be unchallenged.

Rosemary Ryan from Limerick took second place just twenty five seconds later, and last year's winner Pauline Curley from Tullamore came in third.

Behind them came thousands of women who were delighted with having taken part. As one lady tells RTÉ News

I feel wonderful, absolutely wonderful.
