Concerns for the safety and the environment of Bantry as the construction of an oil terminal on Whiddy Island is underway.

In 1966, the Gulf Oil Corporation looked to Whiddy Island in Bantry Bay as the site for a new oil terminal. Construction began on the project began the following year.
