How to get in contact with the police, fire or ambulance service in the event of an emergency by calling 999.

In the event of a fire or a serious accident, it is important to act quickly, dial 999 and ask the telephone operator for either the fire services, an ambulance, or Gardaí.

Every second can be vital in getting help and saving life.

It is even possible to dial 999 in the dark or a room full of smoke. Find the nought with your middle finger by touching the stop, place your index finger in the next hole and then remove your middle finger to dial 999.

The Fire Services deal with road traffic accidents and floods as well as extinguishing fires. For sea and mountain rescues the Aer Corps are required, and in addition to their regular duties the Defence Forces assist communities which have been flooded.

The penalty for making a false alarm call is one month in prison.
