Tánaiste Erskine Childers opens a new armoury exhibition at Powerscourt House in County Wiclow.

A cannon is fired as part of the opening ceremony, prior to Tánaiste and Minister for Health Erskine Childers declaring the Powerscourt House Armoury officially open to the public.

The armour is part of a collection built up by the Powerscourt family during the nineteenth century. It includes suits of armour worn by the 16th century Grand Duke of Ferrara. There is also a charger and warrior clad in Indo-Persian chain mail and armour.

In preparing for the exhibition of this collection, all the armour was removed from Powerscourt last year and sent to Stratford-on-Avon where it was cleaned, polished and restored to its former glory.
