How to custom t-shirts with your own colourful patterns using the art of tie dye.
Tie dye is a modern term invented in the United State of America in the 1960s for a set of ancient resist-dyeing techniques, and for the products of these processes. In the resist-dyeing method, parts of the fabric are covered in a way that prevents the dye from penetrating the open areas.
Mary Fitzgerald uses the tie dye method to create a sunburst pattern on a t-shirt. Dyes and dye fix can be bought in chemists or hardware stores. The rest of the equipment necessary for tie dying are household items such as salt, rubber gloves, wooden spoons, basins, twine and scissors.
A group of children model tie dye t-shirts sporting sunburst, scrunch-up, pleated and striped designs. Lindsay wears a design that has been made from where marbles or stones have been tied into the t-shirt.
Caroline notices Mary Fitzgerald's nails have become discoloured in the tie-dye process. Mary warns,
That’s the reason why you have to wear rubber gloves.
Jonathan is concerned he will not be able to make a tie-dye t-shirt at home because his family use the wrong kind of salt. Mary puts his mind at rest,
You can use low salt or high salt whichever kind you like.
However when making tie-dye t-shirts at home,
Make sure of course that you tidy up the mess after you.
