Scoil bríomhar lán-Ghaelach é Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair, a thugann sároideachas do daoine óga an cheantair. Ach is é easpa suime an Roinn Oideachais an bac is mó atá rompu, ó thaobh feabhsú na scoile de.

Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair, a co-educational Irish language secondary school in the Donegal Gaeltacht, has been serving the young people of the area since 1973. Offering a wide range of subjects, the majority of its students progress to third level education.

In its current location since 1982, the school was badly affected by the government cuts in education in 1985. Since then development of the school’s physical structure has stalled, but not for lack of effort on behalf of the school management, says principal Seán MacCumhaill.

Funding has been applied for, but met with a literal brick wall on every occasion. It is not just the school buildings they are talking about, but an institution which is,

Ag déanamh freastal i rith na bliana ar an phobal.

A sports or general purposes hall is the top priority, as students must either travel by bus to the nearest sports club’s facilities or train outdoors. There is nowhere suitable in the school for music practice, or to stage concerts or plays. Refurbishment and expansion of the metalwork room would facilitate the Leaving Certificate Engineering for students.

Local Teachtaí Dála (TDs) have been doing what they can, but the message never seems to reach the highest echelons. Seán MacCumhaill is starting to wonder if the school is being deliberately overlooked, as other schools in the area have been successful in securing funding. It may be a case of having the right connections but at the end of the day

Ní thuigeann muidne cén fath gur fágadh muidne gan áiseanna.
