To celebrate the launch of An Post customers get to send letters and cards with a penny stamp.
The one penny stamp initiative marks the 200th anniversary of the Irish Post Office and the transfer of the postal service from the Department of Posts and Telegraphs to a new state owned postal company An Post.
Across the two thousand post offices in the Republic of Ireland, people queued to buy the special issue stamps. The demand for stamps was evident at the General Post Office (GPO) on Dublin's O'Connell Street where hundreds of customers queued to avail of the special offer.
Feargal Quinn, Chairman of An Post, spoke about the transfer of ownership of the postal service to An Post in order to meet the growing technological demands.
