Plans to reinstate Belvedere House and gardens in Westmeath to their former glory.
Belvedere House was built around 1740 for Robert Rochford who later became the 1st Earl of Belvedere. The mansion is located on an 800-acre estate near Mullingar in County Westmeath.
In recent years, the estate has fallen into a state of disrepair. Minister for Public Enterprise Mary O'Rourke confirmed a £3.5 million grant from Bord Fáilte for the renovation of the house and gardens. Westmeath County Council who won the estate will raise a further £1.7 million towards the refurbishment.
Westmeath County Manager Jack Taffe explains that the renovated estate will make a magnificent contribution to tourism.
Minister Mary O'Rourke says that,
There's a whole story about Belvedere. Putting it together makes a fine tourism attraction for this county.
The renovations are due to begin within the next six months and it is hoped that the home will be returned to its former glory by the end of 1999.
