Cremation is an option for the first time as crematorium opens at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.
RTÉ News speaks to Glasnevin Cemetery Manager Denis Gallagher about the advantages of cremation. There are economic advantages to cremation at a cost one-third of the price of a traditional burial. Denis Gallagher feels that there is a dignity to being cremated that you don't get with a burial, particularly during bad weather.
I see it as beeing a much more dignified way of dealing with dead bodies.
Mr Gallagher also sees cremation as a much less traumatic experience for the next-of-kin.
Lowering a coffin into a grave is a traumatic experience.
The crematorium was constructed at a cost of £160,000 to the Dublin Cemeteries Committee.
