In 1991 Dublin was officially inaugurated as European City of Culture. The city takes over the mantle from Glasgow which held the honour in 1990.

The celebrations began at the Mansion House as Dublin's Lord Mayor Councillor Michael Donnelly travelled in style in through Dublin city centre. The fanfare continued at St Stephen's Green where the Lord Mayor was treated to a performance by the The Tallaght Festival Band.

Over 1,000 guests were at the National Concert Hall for the formal salute to Dublin and the Lord Provost of Glasgow Susan Baird officially handed over the title to the Lord Mayor of Dublin. An Taoiseach Charles Haughey was also in attendance and addressed the audience saying

Dublin has stoutly maintained its status as one of the great cities of the world
