The impact of the Údarás na Gaeltachta winter helicopter service for Tory Island.

A new helicopter service was introduced to Tory Island in 1985 to give inhabitants a connection to the Donegal mainland in winter.

It's the most exposed and remote of inhabited Irish islands.

The harsh weather had driven half of its 300 population to live on the mainland. But now Údarás na Gaeltachta were subsidising a helicopter service for the months of February and March. Tickets were available from the local comharchumann office, staffed by Fionnuala Ní Chasaide.

RTÉ News meets Fionnuala Ní Chasaide, curate Fr Diarmuid Ó Peicin and Séamus Ó Dúbhgain to find out what life is really like on Tory Island.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 5 March 1985. The reporter is Tommie Gorman.
