Although illegal CB radio use is growing in popularity. What can be done to allow amateur radio enthusiasts to operate safely?

CB radio is one of the fastest growing hobbies in Ireland. RTÉ News reports on the growing popularity of citizen band radio and the fact that it is still illegal. The two-way technology allows people in different stations to communicate with each other through a shared channel.

With around £2 million worth of the equipment being sold in Ireland every year the Department of Posts and Telegraphs is working on legislation to make CB broadcasting legal.

In this RTÉ News report, Martin Bradley, Chairman of the Breakers Club in Co. Clare, talks to reporter Michael Walsh about the pending legislation, radio wave interference, breaking the law and pirate broadcasting.

An RTÉ News report broadcast on 5 June 1981. The reporter is Michael Walsh.
