Clare County Council has written to the Trump organisation in Doonbeg seeking further information about its plans to build a 3km coastal defence wall at its golf resort on the Co Clare coast.

Trump International Golf Links Ireland Enterprises applied to the council in May to build the coastal wall to protect the perimeter of its golf resort from further coastal erosion.

A number of holes at the golf links were badly damaged during recent winter storms. It is estimated the coastal wall could cost up to €8m to build and could be as high as five metres along the beach.

Over 100 submissions have been received by Clare County Council, over 70 which support the proposed works by the Trump organisation.

But over 30 others, among them environmental and surfing groups, believe the works could damage the beauty and ecology of the location, as well as making it unsafe for swimmers and surfers.

The council was due to issue its decision on the planning application next week but confirmed this afternoon that it has written to the Trump organisation seeking further information about the proposed works.

The council was not specific about what kind of further information it was looking for.
