Sabina Higgins, wife of President Michael D Higgins, yesterday paid a visit to jailed anti-war activist Margaretta D'Arcy in Limerick Prison, a spokesperson for Áras an Uachtaráin has confirmed.

Ms D'Arcy, 79, was jailed last Wednesday for three months, having refused to sign a bond not to enter non-public areas of Shannon Airport.

She was convicted of trespassing on the airport runway last October with another anti-war activist.

The Áras an Uachtaráin spokesperson said the visit was personal and private.
