The Irish Anti-War Movement has held a protest outside the Department of Justice calling for the release of activist 79-year-old Margaretta D'Arcy, who has been jailed at Limerick prison for defying a court order.

In a statement, the IAWM condemned the jailing of the woman, who they say is suffering from Parkinson's disease and cancer.

Ms D'Arcy has been active in protesting against the use of Shannon Airport by the US military, and was given a three-month suspended sentence for trespassing at the airport.

That sentence was activated early this week when she defied a court order.

The Anti-Austerity Alliance has also called for the release of Ms D'Arcy and called her imprisonment inhumane.

The group was also planning a protest outside Limerick prison this evening.
