Donegal South West by-election

The Donegal South West by-election is taking place on Thursday, 25 November.

The seat has been vacant since June 2009 after Pat The Cope Gallagher took his seat in the European Parliament.

Four of the five candidates are from the political parties and one is an independent. Another independent candidate, Ann Sweeney, announced she was withdrawing from the election on Tuesday, 23 November.

RTÉ News followed the candidates on the campaign trail as they canvassed a constituency that stretches from Bundoran in the south to Dunfanaghy in the north of the county.

The Week in Politics' Mícheál Lehane profiles the candidates standing in the by-election.

With one week to go to the election, Six One News interviewed the candidates from the four main parties. Sharon Ní Bheoláin interviewed Fianna Fáil's Brian Ó Domhnaill and Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty live on the programme, while Bryan Dobson interviewed Fine Gael's Barry O'Neill and Labour's Frank McBrearty.

On Monday, 15 November, all of the candidates set out their stalls on The Frontline, with Pat Kenny and members of the audience quizzing the six on their policies.

While the by-election is being watched nationally for its impact on the Government's Dáil majority, local issues are to the fore in this race. North-West Correspondent Eileen Magnier looks at the issues that are influencing voters in this huge constituency.

The Today with Pat Kenny programme was presented live from The Diamond in Donegal Town on 18 November. Listen back to part one and part two of the programme.

Earlier in the month, on 10 November, Morning Ireland's Cathal Mac Coille co-presented the programme from the Abbeyview Hotel in Donegal Town. Cathal interviewed candidates standing in the by-election and got expert insight on how the constituency might vote.

Tomorrow is the final day for canvassing in the Donegal South West By-election, with voters going to the polls on Thursday.

All candidates are putting in a final push with local issues now inextricably linked with the national political picture.

Prime Time visited Donegal last week to gauge the public mood ahead of the by-election.
