The President of the Irish Farmers' Association, John Bryan, has accused the Government of doing nothing to reduce costs for the farming sector.

Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, Mr Bryan said continued investment in the sector will result in more jobs and increased exports.

Meanwhile, Minister for Agriculture Brendan Smith has said he is committed to campaigning for a well-resourced and well-funded reformed Common Agricultural Policy.

However, he gave no reassurance to farmers about the extent of post-Budget cuts in his Department.

Reacting to the minister, Mr Bryan said that Minister Smith needs to make his voice heard to ensure job creation.

Earlier, Mr Bryan insisted that continued growth in the farming sector is dependent on key farming schemes being fully funded in the future.

The IFA president said the sector is ready and willing to meet Government targets for growth, but he added it is essential that all farm support schemes remain fully funded.

He said the Government must also provide clear direction and policy supports.

This should include initiatives to improve productivity and competitiveness in the sector.

Mr Bryan said investment in the agri-food sector will create jobs, economic growth and increase exports.

But he said increased carbon and electricity taxes are undermining competitiveness and putting pressure on a predominantly export-led sector.
