Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny has described the controversy involving PJ Sheehan as an embarrassment to the party.
Last July, PJ Sheehan threatened a garda after she tried to stop him driving his car out of the Dáil car park when he was intoxicated.
The Fine Gael leader said he had only just became fully aware of the details of the exchange between Mr Sheehan and the garda that took place at the Dáil.
Mr Sheehan yesterday resigned as the Fine Gael Deputy Spokesperson on Agriculture after he publicly apologised for the way he treated a garda at Leinster House.
Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, Mr Kenny said what happened was completely out of character for Mr Sheehan.
Mr Kenny said the party would now move on from the issue.
His comments come as the Garda Commissioner seeks a report into how information relating to the incident between Mr Sheehan and the garda came into the public domain.
Fachtna Murphy said when he receives a report on the matter he will then decide if further action is necessary.
Commissioner Murphy said the issue was dealt with by the local Garda Superintendent at the time and he said he accepted his handling of the matter.
However, he added, that following a lot of public debate about the issue, he has sought a full report into the matter.
