Fine Gael TD resigns deputy spokesperson roleTuesday 28 September 2010 12.41
Fine Gael TD PJ Sheehan has resigned as the party's Deputy Spokesperson on Agriculture with Special Responsibility for Forestry with immediate effect.
Earlier, the TD apologised for the way he treated gardaí at Leinster House when they prevented him from driving his car while he was under the influence of alcohol.
The Cork South West TD is reported to have threatened a garda after she prevented him from driving his car while he was under the influence of alcohol. The incident happened last July.
According to the Garda report, leaked to news media and reported on several outlets yesterday, an 'extremely intoxicated' Mr Sheehan then complained to another garda that he had been stopped.
Mr Sheehan was reported to have been highly offended, maintaining that nothing of this kind had occurred to him in his three decades as a member of the Dáil.
The leaked report states that Mr Sheehan was informed he was not in a fit condition to drive as he would be a 'serious risk' to himself and others and be liable to arrest for drunken driving.
It adds that Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, who was leaving the complex at the same time, said Mr Sheehan's comments to the garda should be ignored.
