Irish Times journalists win Mahon appeal

The Irish Times Editor Geraldine Kennedy and journalist Colm Keena have won a Supreme Court appeal against a High Court order requiring them to answer questions from the Mahon Tribunal.

In the judgment, Mr Justice Nial Fennelly said it was 'very difficult to discern any sufficiently clear benefit to the Tribunal from any answers to the questions they wish to pose'.

The Tribunal had wanted to question them about the source of an article on former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.

The National Union of Journalists has welcomed today's Supreme Court decision.
