Bus Éireann has said it has revoked a contract with one of its bus contractors after it emerged that the operator had employed a convicted sex offender.

The company said it had terminated the contract this morning after a newspaper report revealed that the man was driving a school bus in Portlaoise, Co Laois.

In the wake of the scandal, two of the country's leading children's organisations, have called on the government to introduce mandatory security checks for people working with children.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Barnardos said legislation should be introduced to ensure background checks were carried out on those working with children.

The ISPCC said 'soft information' could be recorded and made available within the vetting process.

'Soft information' is information regarding people who are identified as a risk to children but who have not got a criminal conviction for child abuse.
