Food shortages reported in Zimbabwe

There have been new reports of food shortages in Zimbabwe where the economy is in steep decline following land reforms introduced by President Robert Mugabe.

The reforms have led to white-owned commercial farms being taken over by squatters and supporters of Mr Mugabe's ZANU-PF party.

Although many of the farms are now said to lie fallow, the Zimbabwean government says there will be a bumper harvest.

However, the UN's World Food Programme has been banned from assessing the situation and the Catholic Archbishop of Bulawayo, Dr Pius Ncube said the country was being misled on the issue.
