The 2007 general election saw Fianna Fáil once again returned as the largest political party.

Their coalition partners the Progressive Democrats lost 6 seats including including Michael McDowell's. Fine Gael gained 19 seats.

Fianna Fáil initially stated that their preference for forming a govenrment would be with the PDs and some independent candidates. However the new governement would be a Fianna Fáil and Green Party coalition.

RTÉ provided the largest ever coverage for an election in Ireland reporting on television radio and online. Among the more interesting reports in the lead up to the election were looks at the effectiveness of campaign posters and impact of election campaigning on the environment.
