During the 1990s RTÉ began to look beyond the traditional broadcasting platforms of radio and television to reach the audience. The growth in ownership of home computers and improving broad band allowed increased access to the internet. RTÉ could begin to provide services online to a reach beyond the shores of Ireland and on new platforms.

Among the major events broadcast were the unveiling of Riverdance as the interval act at the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest and the announcement of an IRA ceasfire.

During this decade RTÉ would appoint a Washington correspondent for the first time while Gay Byrne one of the longest serving broadcasters would retire.
