Dublin Corporation spokesman Pat Russell defends the bulldozers as part of the old city wall is knocked down.
National Museum observers were present on the site to make sure that the old city wall was being dismantled in accordance with the agreement of the National Museum and the Office of Public Works (OPW).
The previous week the observers from the National Museum had walked off the site when they discovered that part of the old wall had been bulldozed. This was the third time they walked off the site due to disputes over the wall which they say has been vandalised.
Dublin Corporation spokesman Pat Russell admits that a small portion had been bulldozed by mistake and explains what happened. Russell explains that sections of the city wall are considered unsafe and are therefore being dismantled. The OPW requires that the Corporation survey and photograph the wall, and number each of the stones to be stored in separately indexed gabions.
