A military parade and ceremony outside the General Post Office in Dublin began events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising.
Veterans from 1916 and the War of Independence took their place in the reviewing stand at the GPO. President de Valera along with his aide de camp, Colonel Seán Brennan, inspected the FCA guard before taking their place in the stand.
Thousands of people young and old lined the route awaiting the parade. Shortly after noon the Irish Defence Forces led by the
Parade Commander, Colonel Dan Fitzgerald, crossed O'Connell Bridge in an open jeep. Many of the soldiers marching wore medals for service with the United Nations.
Members of the Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Air, Medical and Military Police Corps all marched. Representing the Navy were members of An Slua Muiri. Four Vampire jets and helicopters flew over the parade.

Dublin Ceremony Commemorates 1916 |
Information: |
Telefís Éireann (RTÉ) was broadcasting in black and white in 1966. This meant any recordings that were to be kept of commemoration events to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising would only exist in black and white. Television producer Michael Johnston came up with the idea of using colour film cameras to document events of Easter Week 1966 in Dublin and around the country. These films were not intended for broadcast but purely as a record of the events of Easter Week 1966. The footage here is edited from colour film shot on the 10 April 1966. Three film cameras were used operated by Godfrey Graham, Stuart Hetherington and Will Warham who was on the roof of the Harp Building overlooking O'Connell Bridge. |
