As well as his poetry and novels, Patrick Kavanagh wrote for numerous journals and newspapers in an attempt to earn a living from writing. In 1952, with his brother Peter, he produced the journal 'Kavanagh's Weekly'. Patrick Kavanagh also wrote as a film critic for the Catholic journal 'The Standard' (1946 -1949) and later wrote 'The Film Page' for the 'RTV Guide' (whIch later became the 'RTÉ Guide').
Of his work for the RTV Guide the magazine itself said,
“For over a year Patrick Kavanagh has contributed weekly articles to this magazine. They started as film criticism but as time went on their subject matter became more general. Readers have come to know his trenchant critical style, to recognise the objects of his praise and scorn, to follow his constant effort to define standards.”
