The second in a series of 10 kilometre road races for women takes place in Raheny.
In the north Dublin suburb of Raheny, 470 women take part in a 10 kilometre road race. The run is the second in a series of five 10km runs sponsored by Guinness to be held around Dublin. The next 10km in the series will be held in September at University College Dublin.
Christine Kennedy of Galway City Harriers takes first place with a time of 35 minutes and 5 seconds. Deirdre Nagle of Dublin City Harriers comes in second place.
Christine Kennedy who was recently disappointed in the national athletics championships, was determined not to come second again.
I really wanted to win today.
For many of the women taking part in the event, running 10km is a chance to prove themselves. Some women appreciate that the Guinness series excludes men. One participant misses running with men as she feels their presence gives her a more competitive edge. Another also likes mixed races as,
The men are great for giving you support.
This woman is hoping to complete all the Guinness 10km runs in 1985. While she might like to run a marathon, having children impacts the time available to train. While she feels a 10km run is achievable,
I don’t think I’d be able for the 26 miles.
