For the first time in its history Dublin Zoo is closed by a zookeepers' protest.
A one day protest staged by zookeepers closes Dublin Zoo to the public. The protest is due to the refusal of the governing body to meet with zookeepers to discuss a number of issues. The dispute concerns wages, conservation, education, finance and all aspects of zoo safety.
Since it was established in 1831, Dublin Zoo has been closed on Christmas Day each year. It was also closed for one day during the big snow of 1982. This is the first time in Dublin Zoo history that is closed because of action taken by workers.
The zookeepers say their concern is for the animals. Their protest is not a strike as they as they are on site looking after the animals, but without pay.
