American author John Steinbeck and his wife Elaine arrive at Shannon Airport for a two week holiday in Ireland.

John Steinbeck, the American writer and his wife Elaine are in Ireland for Christmas with John Huston at his home outside Craughwell in County Galway. Other guests staying at with the film director include the actor Peter O’Toole.

Wearing a cloak and hat, smoking a cheroot cigar and carrying a cane, John Steinbeck does not engage greatly with the waiting press. He and he and his wife get into a car waiting to bring them to the St Clerans manor house the home of John Huston.

John Steinbeck is known for such famous works as ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ and ‘East of Eden’. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962.
