Soroptomist Clubs mark UN's International Women's Year

1975 was named International Women's Year by the United Nations. Soroptimist clubs throughout Ireland decided to mark it by doing something to help women in the arts. Most of them voted to hold exhibitions. RTÉ's arts and media programme 'Over the Barricades' attended the opening of the Galway Soroptimist Club's exhibition, which was held in Kenny's Art Gallery and featured 75 paintings by professional women artists.

The exhibition was opened by Máirín Bean Uí Dhálaigh, wife of President Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh. It included four paintings by Bea Orpen and sculpture by Lunya Ryan. Those present speak about the prejudice against women in this report and express the hope that women will in future take themselves far more seriously. Artist Pauline Bewick says she paints for herself and it is a very personal thing.

This edition of 'Over the Barricades' was broadcast on 3 March 1975.
