Rubbish accumulates in Dublin as a sudden strike prevents street cleaning and bin collections.

The lightning strike by cleaning staff in Dublin could not have come at a worse time for Bord Fáilte as it launched an anti-litter week. The strike comes after the All Ireland Senior Football Semi-Final between Dublin and Derry at Croke Park.

There was no one immediately available to clear the litter left by forty thousand fans.

An early morning picket placed on a Dublin Corporation depot on the North Strand put a stop to street cleaning and refuse collection across the north city centre. At least 150,000 homes were impacted by the industrial action in the suburbs of Drumcondra, Coolock and Artane. Pickets were also placed on other depots as more workers joined the lightning strike.

Some of the men say they were picketing because they had received no payment for overtime for the last five weeks. Dublin Corporation say that the non-payment was the cumulative effect of another strike by staff in their computer section, which has since been resolved.
