The Cork International Film Festival takes place for the 20th time in the year that the city's Savoy cinema closed.
This is the first Cork International Film Festival to be held since the main cinema in Cork, The Savoy, closed earlier this year. The Savoy will reopen for the duration of the festival where 30 feature films and 76 short films will be shown. A record 39 countries are represented at this year's festival.
Cork International Film Festival founder Dermot Breen outlines some of the economic benefits the event brings. He says the festival receives publicity from all over the world and provides a tremendous promotion for the entire country. The 1975 festival is the biggest to date with the largest number of countries represented and the highest ticket sales. Dermot Breen is hopeful that The Savoy will open again next year when the festival will celebrate 21 years.
