An underwater cable from the mainland makes it possible for the first telephone to be installed on Coney Island in Sligo Bay.
In Sligo, a submarine telephone link from the mainland to Coney Island in County Sligo is constructed. The work is carried out by 12 men when the ebb tide is at its lowest.
The 182-metre submarine cable is laid underground on the mainland and the Island shore. It is specially weighted to stay on the bottom of the main shipping channel between Rosses Point and Coney Island.
The coin box connection is being installed in the Coney Island home of John McGowan.
It's the first time that the few families living on Coney Island have been put in direct contact with the mainland.
While islanders will have a direct link with the mainland, the telephone will also benefit holidaymakers visiting the Island.
