Starlings flock together in thousands in the sky above a west Cork townland.

Starlings are one of Ireland's most common birds and can be found in a wide variety of habitats. They breed in loose colonies and can often be seen feeding in flocks.

During the winter months, resident birds are joined by those migrating from colder climates to form huge flocks made up of hundreds of thousands of birds.

Dusk is the best time to view them in flight before they settle down for the night. This phenomenon is known as a murmuration.

Derrynacaheragh in west Cork is the location for the spectacle which blackens the skies overhead.
