A joint naval ceremony pays respects to the men killed in an explosion on board a submarine in Cork.

On 16 February 1905, six crew members of the A5 submarine were killed in an explosion while the submarine was refuelling at Cork. The A5 was the first submarine ever to enter Cork Harbour.

Relatives of the dead men gathered at Christ Church in Rushbrooke to remember the submariners. At the Old Church Cemetery, British Navy personnel paraded alongside their Irish colleagues. A naval stone was laid by members of the naval service and wreaths were placed on the graves by relatives many of whom had travelled from Britain for the first time.

One of the relatives, Michael Sinden, describes the emotion of remembering the deceased 100 years on.

The ceremony was organised by the Cork branch of the Naval Association who pledged that the six men would not be forgotten.

The dead included Sub-Lieutenant F C Skinner, C E R A Charles Sinden, P O 1st Class Arthur Manley, P O 1st Class William J Pryor, Leading Stoker Earnest Goldthorpe and Stoker Harry Davis.
