The long awaited new library at University College Cork is opened.
As far back as 1897, there were reports of overcrowding and lack of space for books at the University College Cork (UCC) library. Deputy librarian Beatrice Doran says that since then, the library has had to occupy various locations throughout the campus.
The long wait for a new library was well worthwhile.
The new library named after George Boole was built on the site of an old quarry, once a football field. The facilities at the library are the most modern in the country and will be available to students, academics, researchers and external readers.
George Boole was the first professor of mathematics at UCC. Born in England George Boole was self-taught and upon his arrival in Cork had neither a secondary education nor a university degree.
Boole, in fact, is the father of modern computer technology. His Boolean algebra is the basis of modern computer technology today.
