Iarnród Éireann has put another piano in a rail station, the fifth one is at Kent Station in Cork.

Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) has installed a fifth piano to be used by the public at a rail station. On World Piano Day, early morning rail commuters at Kent Station in Cork are serenaded by multi-instrumentalist Dylan Howe playing the latest piano on the station concourse.

Passengers are encouraged to take a moment from their daily commute to stop and listen or to play the piano themselves. Commuter Eilish Butler from Durrus in County Cork is moved to accompany Dylan Howe in song.

I just couldn’t resist it, it’s lovely.

Another commuter Andrew King from Lombardstown in County Cork is surprised to find his former love of music reawakened by Dylan Howe’s piano playing.

The Public Piano Project is the brainchild of piano tuning and repair expert John Murphy.

It adds a nice air to a public space like a train station and it brings people together, which is what it’s about.

Iarnród Éireann began by having a permanent piano installed at Pearse Station, Dublin in 2017. Pianos were then added to Heuston Station and Conolly Station. Since then, Plunkett Station in Waterford has also come on board. Iarnród Éireann plans to extend the project throughout the network.
