On St Patrick's Day Aonghus McAnally learns how to tell shamrock from clover.
As 'eminent shamrockologist' Nicky Furlong explains, shamrock is plentiful in Ireland and has been growing here since the end of the last ice age, approximately 15,000 years ago.
Shamrock (in Irish seamróg meaning little or young clover) is a type of clover and ideally suited to growing in Irish soil. It can be identified by its stems which are intertwined,
The shamrock is like a mat, and is very easy to pin.
Clover however grows on a single stem, its leaves are much bigger than that of shamrock, and will wilt quickly once picked.
