Irish growers have signed a new contract to supply potatoes to European buyers.
The country's largest vegetable producing co-operative, North Dublin Growers’ Co-op Ltd. (NDG), has been contracted to supply four thousand tonnes of potatoes to a Swedish catering company.
This is a significant development for potato growers, says Bill Frazer, general manager of NDG.
We now have a toe hold in the market in Europe.
The deal was made at the German Food Fair in Anuga a few months ago through An Córas Tráchtála, the state-sponsored body that markets Irish goods overseas.
Given the current glut of potatoes in the country, this is the best option for the co-op's potato growers, believes Frazer,
The farmers are better to get their money into their hands.
