A woman is arrested after driving her car into the gates of Government Buildings in Dublin.
Shortly after 10 am a woman in her 50s, appeared to crash her car into the gates of the Department of An Taoiseach at Government Buildings on Dublin's Merrion Row.
The woman was taken from the vehicle and arrested for criminal damage. She was brought to Pearse Street Garda station for questioning where she can be held for 24 hours.
The collision occurred at low speed and nobody was injured in the incident. There was minor damage to the woman’s Nissan Micra but the steel gates remained intact.
The gates are continuously watched by An Garda Síochána. Apparently when gardaí informed the woman she could not pass through the gates, she expressed anger with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. Then she tried to drive through the closed gates.
The Taoiseach Leo Varadkar was made aware of the incident. He was not in Government Buildings when it happened.
Gardaí treated the incident as low-level protest action rather than terrorism or a major security alert. The woman was eventually released without charge.
