A portrait of President Mary Robinson is unveiled at Trinity College Dublin.
The idea for the portrait came about when Senator and Trinity College Dublin graduate Dr Mary Henry noticed a distinct lack of paintings of women in the college. Dr Henry, on behalf of the medical alumni of the university, commissioned artist Carol Graham to paint the president. The work which took a year to complete was a major challenge for the artist given the busy schedule of President Mary Robinson.
I was working frantically each time there was a sitting.
Carol Graham wanted the portrait to represent the strength of the personality of the president.
The Provost of TCD Dr Tom Mitchell accepted the portrait on behalf of the university. He described it as an accomplished painting with a fine sense of colour and harmony.
